Breed History
Papillons are small, friendly, elegant toy dogs. They are gentle, alert and vivacious. They make good home pets as well watchdogs or ratters. The Papillon ranks number one Toy Dog in obedience.
The Papillon is believed to be originally from France. They are also said to have descended from Spanish dwarf spaniel. The Papillon is one of the oldest breeds of dogs with a recorded history in Europe going back nearly 700 years.This breed was also known as Continental Toy Spaniel, or Squirrel Spaniel. The drop eared variety of the breed was called the Phalene.
The word "Papillon" means "butterfly dog" in French. The breed was given this name due to their beautiful butterfly ears. It is believed that the name was given by Marie Antoinette who was fond of Papillons. The other famouse owner of papillons was Henry III, Marie Antoinette and Madame de Pompadour. In 17 centure these dogs were extremely popular in court circles in France.They were also portrayed in many paintings of the Renaissance period.
